A Scenic Drive Through North Central Florida |
Connecting Silver Springs with the city of Ormond Beach, the Florida Black Bear Scenic Byway (SR 40) traverses some of Florida's most pristine ecosystems, centered on the Big Scrub, the world’s largest scrub forest. Providing access to a wide array of public lands, including Silver River State Park, the Cross Florida Greenway, the Ocala National Forest, Lake George State Forest, Heart Island Conservation Area, Lake Woodruff NWR, DeLeon Springs State Park, and Tiger Bay State Forest, the Black Bear Scenic Byway runs through the heart of Florida black bear habitat.
This website provides an introduction to the corridor and its many recreational opportunities, including swimming spectacular first and second magnitude springs; paddling and boating the Ocklawaha, Silver, St. Johns, and Tomoka Rivers; visiting Silver Springs, hiking the Florida Trail, Florida’s own National Scenic Trail, and other trails; camping at numerous recreation areas; utilizing equestrian, bicycle, and ORV trails; fishing various lakes; and hunting in WMAs. Here, too, you’ll find information about the cultural heritage of the region, from its history and communities to interpretive sites such as the Pioneer Settlement for the Creative Arts.
