Silver SpringsAt the western end of the Florida Black Bear Scenic Byway is the town of Silver Springs, where charming retro motels and several campgrounds provide a base for exploration of the corridor. Silver Springs - the spring - is one of the world's largest first magnitude springs, gushing more than 550 million gallons of water a day to form the Silver River. Silver Springs - the attraction - has been a draw for visitors since the 1880s, with its signature glass bottomed boats showcasing the many spring vents along the bottom of the river. Look for produce stands with farm fresh fruit and veggies along CR 35, or cool off at Wild Waters, a water park tucked beneath ancient live oaks, open during the summer months. Spend some quality time walking in the woods at Silver River State Park, or riding your mountain bike down the backcountry trails. Along Sharpes Ferry Road, part of the scenic loop at this end of the byway, you'll find a trailhead for the Cross Florida Greenway, leading you along the Florida Trail through the lush palm hammock of Marshall Swamp. Pause at the historic marker for Marshall Plantation to note a chapter in the War Between the States. Stop in at the Public Lands Visitor Center along SR 40 to pick up maps, ask questions about outdoor recreation, and browse the bookstore. Kayakers and canoeists can launch at Silver River State Park and the Ray Wayside Park to ply waters lined with virtual jungles of vegetation. No matter your interest, you'll find plenty to explore in and around Silver Springs!
